Dear families 

Welcome to our new e-newsletter! We heard the feedback from our families and hope you find the new layout easier to read and more enjoyable. 

To get the most out of our new communication platform, we ask for our families to download the Schoolzine app on your phone and to subscribe to our newsletter. The app will be the easiest way to contact the school, check our webpage, download forms, get the newsletter, notices and to inform us of absences. Your child's teacher will be able to assist you. 

Please note too, that the option to change the newsletter into another language of your choice, is available at the top of this page.

It is with great pride that I look forward to our upcoming Public School Review. Our staff have been thorough in our self-assessment over the last six months, which has evidenced a comprehensive picture of Malibu School's achievements and areas of opportunity. We celebrate that we are an incredible school and that we are united in our persuit of ongoing improvement, building on what is working with a mind-set of 'even better if'. This is how we will continue to make a difference for our students and families and we look forward to doing this with you.

School Board Update

On Wednesday 18th August, the School Board members look forward to meeting with the Public School Review team to share stories of our achievements and successes. 

As school board team members we consider our role to be a privilege, working alongside staff and members of our community who are passionate about Malibu School.

During our next Board meeting, we will be reviewing the 2020 Annual Report and our new 2021 - 2024 Business Plan.  The development of this plan has followed much review of feedback and data about staff and parent satisfaction and student progress and achievement. 

I look forward to sharing more information about the outcome of the Public School Review and progress made against our new Business Plan in the coming weeks.

WA Education Award Nominee

We are proud to have nominated Tricia Reghenzani, Social Trainer, for this year's WA Education School Support Staff member of the Year Award.

“Tricia is the soul of this school and her relentless selflessness and positive and persistent influence visibly reaches across every student, every classroom, staff member and family to the benefit of all.” Merrilee Wright, Principal, Malibu School.

Finalists will be notified later this year and we know our families join us in wishing her all the best!

Whole school NAIDOC Celebration

Kaya everyone!

Malibu School embraced NAIDOC Week.  The acronym NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. It is a time to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The theme for NAIDOC 2021 is “Heal Country”.  It is always important to honour the traditional custodians of this land and Malibu School is grateful for the opportunity to recognise, acknowledge and respect their people and culture.  

All classes participated in a sustainability themed project which reflected the NAIDOC 2021 theme, students were encouraged to bring in waste-free lunch boxes and experienced a ‘treasure swap’. 

To culminate NAIDOC Week, we held a whole-school assembly.  We were honoured to have our local elder Lindsay Calyun present a Welcome to Country and conduct a smoking ceremony.  We were also privileged to have the very talented John ‘Kookaburra Man’ play the didgeridoo and the wonderful dancers, Adrian and Peter perform some traditional dances for us.  We had the pleasure of welcoming Madeline King, Member of Parliament, who presented the school with new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, which will now hang proudly on our flag poles!  Each class presented their sustainability class project, which displayed a great deal of thought and hard work by all involved!  They are now on display in the front office for all to see!

The assembly was such an incredible success, and it was absolutely wonderful to see the genuine enthusiasm and connectivity from everyone involved during such an important event!

Yanga, yanga, yanga!

TA 3 - "Mini-Beasts"

After a long Term 2, the staff and students in TA 3 are very motivated to begin an exciting new Semester.  Our theme for this Semester is “Mini-Beasts”. Many wonderful literacy stories have begun as well as an integration throughout all learning areas. 

We welcome Gelinda (Monday -Thursday) and Tylah (Friday) to our team. Even though Melinda has moved classrooms the students keep a close contact with her.

NAIDOC week was enjoyed by all with a very special moment for Jarrius at the Friday assembly having an interaction and a photo with Elder Lindsay, Kookaburra Man and the boys who danced.  We presented our fantastic recycled mobile and our cute Bug House to the whole school which gave us a proud moment.  We look forward to a productive and fun Semester and appreciate all the support from our families as we move forward.

TA 5/6 - Welcome back for Term 3

A big welcome to our Kindy students who have now increased their attendance to three days a week. We certainly have a very busy and energetic Early Childhood classroom now.  We are continuing on with our theme of “Pets / Animals” and have started the term off with learning about owls and nests. The students have created some fantastic little owls sitting in nests that are now on display in our super colourful classroom.  Our alphabet activities have focused on the letter “Nn” and the letter “Oo” and we have had so much fun exploring noodles and oats. We have introduced a few new and engaging songs during our circle time activities including jiggling colourful scarves, balancing and throwing beanbags, tapping on sticks and shaking our shaker bottles that the students have made themselves.

With the introduction of the new timetable, the students are now attending “The Arts” with Lucretia, “Music” with Debbie Smith, “Sport” with Debbie Flynn, “Science” with Rob, “Stephanie Alexander Cooking and Gardening” with Jane” and “Protective Education” with Sofie.

We are introducing “Enterprise” into the timetable this term and our students will be making recycled shaker bottles in Term 3 and magic reindeer food in term 4. These products will be on sale at whole school events later in the year. Through our PBS program every Friday, students across Primary will be attending clubs on a Friday afternoon and our students will get to participate in clubs such as “Girls Club, “Boys Club”, “TACPAC”, “Sports Games” and “Laughing Yoga.  It should be a fun way to end the week.

So as you can see we are super busy in Early Childhood and that’s before we even start the hard work!!!.  Looking forward to another fun-filled term.

TA 11 - Aboriginal Culture

TA 11 students have enjoyed learning about the Aboriginal culture and how they used to live a long time ago. The students participated in the NAIDOC day celebrations by creating a humpy (shelter) and they practiced dot painting on a wooden board. During NAIDOC day the students enjoyed participating in the activities provided like stone painting and writing a message on a leaf to put on a tree.

TA 15 - Exploring Textures

In TA15, we’ve been discovering a range of baking textures during our Cooking lessons.  We have in addition been using switching devices and kitchen appliances to concoct an assortment of recipes including scones and muffins. This week in Cooking, students have used their hands to explore several textures including soft and sticky baking ingredients. Our students were invited to express their responses to the baking textures by indicating the ones they preferred and if any they may have disliked.

TA 16 - NAIDOC Focus

Our class has settled back into Term 3 and we have enjoyed participating in the NAIDOC assembly and the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program.  During NAIDOC week we learnt about boomerangs.  We are enjoying the Stephanie Alexander Program where we have been learning and practising being safe in the kitchen, weighing and measuring out ingredients for the different recipes we have made.

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) Update

Our whole school behaviour expectations are centred around safety, respect and being our best. Each week, PBS lessons help to build these skills across the school, in ways that allow our students to learn and use these behaviours in a range of contexts. 

This month, we are focusing on:  'Showing Respect in the classroom' and 'Being your best in the Classroom'

PBS tokens are given when we see great examples of these behaviours and certificates are awarded at each of our assemblies. 

Please talk to your child's teacher if you would like some posters of our PBS dolphins to take and use at home!

Malibu Nurses Update

Colds

Upper respiratory tract infections or colds are everywhere, especially in winter, so it is almost impossible to stop children from catching them. Here are some points which may help:

• Teach your child to cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, and to wash hands straight afterwards. (Sneeze into elbow if unable to wash hands without help).
• Hands should be washed after blowing noses and before eating.
• Use tissues once and then throw them in the bin. (Avoid using handkerchiefs.)
• Keep your child home from school if he/she has a cold/cough/fever/pain.
• Make sure that your children eat a balanced diet of plenty of healthy foods.
• Keep children away from smoke – it irritates their eyes and nasal passages, making it more likely that they will catch a cold. 

What to do if your child gets a cold

No treatment will cure a cold or make it go away more quickly, but you can help your child feel more comfortable:

• Rest: This need not be in bed.
• Provide extra drinks: If your child doesn’t want to drink much, try giving lots of small sips of water, milk or juice, or ice blocks to suck for older children.

Germs are spread easily to classroom staff and other students.  Keep your child home if your child cannot;

• Cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing
• Wipe his/ her nose independently
• Wash hands without help

Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis, or ‘gastro’ is a common condition in children of all ages. It occurs when the bowel is infected by a virus or bacteria. Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps and sometimes, fever. Gastroenteritis, or ‘gastro’ is a common condition in children of all ages. Most cases in children are not serious, but it is very important to make sure that a child with gastro receives enough fluid.

If your child has gastro, keep them away from school for 48 hours after vomiting and diarrhoea have stopped. If symptoms persist see your family doctor.

The easiest way to prevent gastro is to make sure everyone in the family washes their hands regularly, especially before eating and after going to the toilet.
