Dear families 

We are so proud of our Malibu drummers and Glee Clubbers for their fabulous performance at the MANPAC recently! Thank you to our families who were able to be part of the energetic audience! 

Our performers thrilled all and the enjoyment on their faces shows why this program is so important! Congratulations to each of our performers, to Debbie Smith leading our drummers and Leonie Williams leading our Glee Club. A big thank you to all staff who supported on the evening, as without the support of our staff after hours, this wonderful concert could not have happened. We look forward to their next performance - which will hopefully be during our annual Market Day @ Malibu, Friday 15th November. Please save that date!

After saying a farewell to our STEM teacher Amy, and with Verity reducing hours in Art to Monday in seniors, we are still working towards a full complement of teachers. Teacher Patricia in M1 is also on leave and we hope to have some news to share soon about our new teachers to welcome to the Malibu team. 

I would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the members of our P&C, following a very successful term of events, including the Mother's Day stall, Father's Day stall and coordination of the Malibu Cook Book - which I am very excited about! In addition, the team has secured some wonderful community partners to support the P&C activities, all of which will benefit the students. The P&C meet regularly and I encourage any of our parents and carers to come along to meetings, if not to volunteer during events, perhaps to keep informed about happenings and to connect as a group of families with very similar interests and experiences. 

We also still have a parent representative vacancy on the School Board and I hope there is a parent or carer who might be interested. If this might be you, please do reach out for more information, or nominate through the form below. 

As we head into the last two weeks of term, I am looking forward to our end of term assembly and annual Faction Carnival - where I hope to see many of our families and friends! Please do make it if you can, we have a great day planned with activities to celebrate your children and to spend time with our families. More information and a link to RSVP is found below.

P&C News

Some of our P&C members attended the WACSSO Conference in Perth recently where P&Cs come together to network and learn more about the amazing work our volunteers and organisations do, whether it is environmental initiatives, fundraising efforts or community building activities. It is also a time where we learn more about the education system, and things that are affecting our youth of today.

One of the big discussions was the review of the Education Act 1999. The review was first announced in December 2023 and is currently open for public feedback. The Department is pushing for inclusion of all students into a mainstream system.  As this will directly affect our children, I encourage you to look into it further and offer your important feedback by answering their questionnaire at the link below:

The cookbook is on its way! A massive shout out to both Malibu Fresh Essentials and Galaxy Elite All Stars for contributing towards the printing costs. We can’t wait to see the end results!

The Father’s Day Stall is always a heart warming P&C event where we get to interact with families and children in celebration of the Dads and Special Men in our lives. Thank you once again to all those involved. To our fathers, carers, granddad and special people we hope you had a Happy Father’s Day!

Whole School Faction Carnival - Friday 20th September

9am – 10.20am Whole School Assembly

10.20 – 10.50 Parent morning tea in the staff room, meet and greet with the Principal, Deputies, School Board members and P&C

10.50 – 11.10 Parents join students in playground / class

11:10 am -12:40 Carnival commences on the school bike track oval. Families are welcome to bring fold up chairs, with some school chairs available.

• Factions march past (around bike track) with banners, streamers etc.

12.40 – 1.10pm Lunch: families are invited to join their child and class for a class party. Families staying are encouraged to bring a plate to share, as appropriate for your family and child.

We would love to see all students come to school in their Faction shirts and welcome all family members, carers, and friends to cheer on our wonderful students as they participate in a range of fun activities!

Junior 4

This term we have been working hard on continuing to keep up our class routines, with all students still working hard to use their transitional schedules and keeping with our school values of being our best, keeping safe, and showing respect.

During our class literacy lessons, we have been working on learning the story We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, which we are all thoroughly enjoying. A huge win is how well all our students did with their Bear Hunt Story maps, with a shout out to Raiden for reciting the whole story this week when reading it! In the coming weeks we will be innovating on the story, writing our own version – ‘We’re Going on a Teacher Hunt!’.

We’ve also had a ball making some delicious milkshakes and ice cream Sundays during enterprise, while we were focusing on communication building and following one-step verbal instructions

We have also had a lot of fun participating in the Tucker Bush incursion, where we learnt about some bush tucker plants that we can use in cooking this year. We also got to help plant our schools bush tucker garden!

We have also had a ball celebrating book week! We all loved dressing up and dancing our hearts out at the PESA disco on Tuesday, listening to a whole school book reading with Merrilee on Wednesday, and making potions with the freedom fairies on Friday!

We are looking forward to seeing everyone at our assembly in week 10!

Junior 6

Junior 6 has had an amazing Term 3 so far. It’s gone so fast, and we expect the rest of the year to follow suit! We have been practising our Auslan alphabet and signs of the week during our morning activities, and it is so wonderful to start seeing some of these signs being used by our class throughout the day 😊

We all got into the spirit of Book Week, as both staff and students dressed in the theme of Alice in Wonderland. Making kindness potions, reading a book a day, participating in a Book Week parade and disco, and joining in with the fairies to make magic potions has left us all full of enthusiasm for the magic that books bring us.

We have been very busy during mathematics developing our number knowledge, as well as transferring those skills into real world activities during cooking sessions. We explored weights and length when we made ham and cheese pinwheels, chocolate crackles, kindness potions and apricot balls. During the rest of this term, we will be taking our lessons outside and utilise the great facilities drawn on the basketball court to consolidate our number recognition.

We are busy getting our item ready for Enterprise Market Day in Term 4, and are spending time investigating what a traditional Aboriginal campsite looked like. From that we are going to be constructing a diorama of a campsite, and we are busy gathering natural resources to make it.

Finally, Junior 6 is spending a great deal of time learning about how to stay safe in the classroom, school, and community. We are building up to undertake a range of excursions next term and have been practicing walking across a crossing and visiting a shop. Say hi if you see us out and about 😊

Senior 4

In Senior 4 What have we been up to? Well, we could fill up this whole newsletter with all that we have done but will share just a few fabulous moments with you all. In Maths we have been learning all things measurement from measuring and weighing Mr Big Brown Bear to finding out the total space of the MAC. For English we are growing in confidence in our greeting and news telling and for Enterprise we are being super arty and getting our goods ready for the upcoming Malibu Market Day.

Magic you say? Yes, Magic! We had a magical time in book week dressing up as Fairies, Astronauts and Pikachu and enjoying the disco. There was also time in our busy schedule to join in some Community Participation and head to the movies.

Music

Music lessons this semester have seen students learn about the variety of instruments from countries all over the world. Many modern instruments that we use today originated in Ancient Africa or China and have evolved over the years as technological advances have been made. Students have gained hands-on experiences exploring Coconut Thumb Pianos and Gamelans from Indonesia, Bongo Drums from Cuba, Castanets from Spain and Caxixi shakers from Ghana. They have used switch devices and visual response boards to provide personal responses to video performances featuring instruments from around the world.

Some of the more unusual instruments we have come across are the Theremin (an electrical musical instrument that requires no physical contact and relies on its electromagnetic field to produce pitch and volume), stringed instruments like the Chikara from India and ancient Bamboo Nose Flutes from Polynesia.

Our Drummers and Glee Clubbers are putting the finishing touches to their performance for the Western Australian Government Schools Music Society event in Mandurah on Tuesday 27^th August. Our 13 performers have been working hard to learn the rhythms and AUSLAN signs to bring you what will be an amazing show!

COMMUNITY NEWS

NDIS Networking Hub - Rockingham Disability Expo

We invite NDIS participants, their families, carers and more to join us at the Gary Holland Centre on Wednesday 25th September for our free disability Expo. Whether you are already on the NDIS and are looking for more support or whether you are waiting to join and have a lot of questions, we welcome you and your kids on the day. Hear from over 30 local NDIS providers about what they offer and how they can help. We have loads of free entertainment for the kids including free face painting and Rugby WA All Abilities and the first 200 people on the day will receive a free coffee and sausage sizzle thanks to our local sponsors.

KEYS Parent Workshop Calendar Term 4

Free workshops for parents/carers living in the Cities of Kwinana, Rockingham, Cockburn, 
Melville & Fremantle, with children aged from birth to 18 years.

POSITIVER PARTNERSHIPS, provide professional development and parenting programs both face to face and online, for parents/carers of children with ASD or those working with them. Among these is a 2-day parenting program coming up in Rockingham. You will find further information here

Uni Camp for Kids - Free picnic

Our 4th Picnic of 2024 is scheduled for Sunday the 6th of October for students in year 1 to 6. The picnics run ALL DAY and are provided FREE to the children attending.

To secure a spot to the picnic, please complete and return the Picnic Permission Form to secretary@unicampforkids.org.au by Friday the 20th of September. 

Spaces are limited and allocated on a first in, first served basis. After all spots are filled children can be placed onto our reserves list, and we will contact the child and/or you directly if space becomes available.
